The vast majority of the novel's historical allusions concern instances of war
and conquest, and the novel definitely intends us to apply their lesson to "current
events"--not Costaguana events but those of our own world and time. For a
specific example of one such allusion, see Decoud's rant at the beginning of Chapter
2-5.
