The thief, who was implictly trusted by his employers, now challenges the sailor
to wake up and learn a kind of universal principle of distrust, again in keeping
with the novel's themes of subjectivity and social unreliability. In the next
sentence the sailor deserts from the schooner, as if unable to live any longer
in a society undermined by such pessimistic truths.
