In my annotations of the novel I argue that this line (uttered of course by Nostromo)
stands for the Marxist notion of gradual progress in the shell of the old society
towards the birth of the new, socialist, one. In this context the sailor's boast
is indeed "interesting," as a kind of openly-declared revolt. Note that
it is again Conrad, rather than the sailor, who takes interest in the boast.
