What Conrad is "going to say" refers on the surface to the rest of the
paragraph, but in a deeper sense to the novel (which is traditionally placed after
the Author's Note). I.e., Conrad is here hoping that the allegory of Antonia as
idealism, though subtle, is present enough to be understood. Compare his metaphor
of "relief" with Decoud's perception of her as "an allegorical
statue."
