Giselle speaks of Mrs Gould as one who would take in penniless orphans, again
subtly prying Nostromo away from the idea of wealth. It doesn't work; see his

This is also foreshadowing; Nostromo and Giselle will indeed end up with Mrs
Gould, when Nostromo is on his deathbed.
