Conrad uses the intoxicated bewilderment of the characters to portray the phantasmagoric,
dream-like quality of the quest for utopian socialism. Though that utopia is the
ultimate goal of every revolution and the only state proper to the magnificent
spirit of Man, the novel portrays it as an unreachable dream, even while arguing
that the quest for it is Man's highest and only meaningful struggle.
