There is an allegorical level to this line. As explained in an earlier note , cynicism can only condemn mankind from the standpoint of compassion for it. Cynicism must therefore be "really good," in that it is based on a love for mankind -- but it can never admit that love aloud, because to do so would be to undermine its own condemnation.
