To the rumbling socialism of the masses, Dr Monygham responds that the People
are "nothing" unless they serve the ruling elite and join the unifying
ideal that holds society together. This is essentially the same argument he made
to Nostromo.
The "distance" reflects the powerlessness of his voice to stop the socialist
movement.
