The inscription is a better "likeness" than is the bust; the only thing
missing are the words "in vain." The almost-explicit suggestion is that
the "struggle for Right and Justice" continues in the New Era; the difference
is that people no longer place faith in the nation-state as the means of achieving
it. Note that the bust of Don Jose, the allegory of nationalism, is in a church,
suggesting that the national ideal has been subsumed by the religious.
