This is our only onstage sight of Hernandez, the Robin Hood allegory of social
justice. He is dressed in a long black coat, signifying the darkness and secrecy
of the socialist campaign. He is the Minister of War, symbolizing socialism's
militant position working within the accepted system. His downcast eyelids and
furrowed brow reflect the troubled prospects for the movement, and he carries
a rosary, symbolizing socialism's alliance with religion as the moral ideals animating
the populace in the new era. However, his "high-crowned" hat, symbolizing
his sheltering dream-ideal, suggests the ambition of rulership he has for the
People, and "the force he has organized" is far larger than the "Carabineers
of the Campo."
