Nostromo's flare-up is a response to the unstated message behind Monygham's sardonic advice: that it's a kill-or-be-killed world, in which Nostromo's only option is to choose sides. Nostromo's retort is the socialist one, that no matter which side the poor choose, they are betrayed by the rich.
