The People and the Devil having made their compact and agreed to rebuild society, they can leave the symbolic Custom House of unformed society, and proceed toward united society itself, symbolized of course by the Inn of United Italy. But until they reach it, the People are not yet fully resolved on their course, and the metaphoric dialogue continues.
