The reference to Nostromo as a "man" returns, this time in contrast to Monygham as the Devil, who is basically saying, "As Man, you're the one who needs society, so leave me be!" His dismissive ferocity is belied, however, by his fear that Nostromo will in fact run off: to the Devil, the "indispensable" element is Man.
