We return dizzingly to the symbolism of the Gulf, with its "impenetrable darkness" (universal formlessness and utter isolated subjectivity) and its "sinking lighter" (the final failure or destruction of the old society). To that is added "the obscurity of the kitchen," with the continuing symbolism of eating as violence, suggesting that society is a place of obscured violence.
