The reluctant People try another tack, suggesting that they do not need the society of the material interests. They are equally necessary to any society, and could "make friends" even with the Monterists. This corresponds to the desire to escape the deceptions of socialism by escaping the industrial society that birthed it, and returning to more primitive times.

The Devil's answer, below, is that the People have irretrievably committed themselves to the cause of the material interests and cannot go back, even at the "ransom" price of handing over the silver, i.e., sacrificing their integrity and becoming "friends" in the old loyal sense. Now it is the cargadores (i.e., the workers of the world) who are "betrayed" into continuing their fatal allegiance with industrial progress.
