More subtle references to Monygham as the Devil; the most overt are yet to come.
The paradox between Monygham's cynicism and his success as a healer is brought
to the fore here. On the deeper level it also applies to the Devil, who as "a
great healer" is attempting nothing less than the healing of society, but
in such a cynical, trap-setting manner for mankind that this very healing makes
him indeed "an evil sort of man."
