"Despair" is a slightly curious word which I think reinforces my notion
that Hirsch is undergoing the mental torture of losing his dream-ideal, in addition
to the "agony" of his physical torture. Recall that Hirsch's "imagination"
of fear presented danger as "an accident to the body alone."
To me, "despair" suggests Hirsch facing the disillusioning truth that
his spirit is also involved.
