The implication is that Hirsch, too, looked an ugly death in the face, and that
all three are fools for doing so. Nostromo certainly considers Hirsch a fool,
and himself a fool for his exploited faithfulness. His suggestion is that the
doctor "may" have an equally foolish reason for self-sacrifice...
