Palmarias means palm-groves, but the word also means "obvious." I'm not sure whether the double meaning is intentional, or what it signifies. Perhaps it means the "obvious" fate of the People once cast out of civilized society: a state of solitary, primitive indigence, in essence prehistoric man. At any rate, Nostromo is clearly eager to avoid this little museum-exhibit of caveman life -- though he rejects civilized/stratified society, he wants its benefits, too. This is another ricochet of the People toward socialism, which amounts to the attempt to have civilization without stratification.
