The conflicting use of "Capataz" and "Nostromo" points up the yet unfinished struggle toward the socialist consciousness. The "Capataz" is the old identity of the People -- loyal and obedient. Monygham, speaking for society (see below), desires this identity to stay, but although the People would like to reject this identity, they as yet have no alternative identity to "go" to, and so are stuck with the possessive name they dislike.
