Compare Decoud, for whom the gulf was "the end of all things,"
and Captain Mitchell with Sotillo's troops, who felt "as if the world were
coming to an end."
In each case the character experiences a condition of unusual helplessness threatening
their conception of the world and the self; in each case the response to the subjective
trauma is an apparent vanishing of the objective world.
