Compare his "sane materialism." Note that the narrator places the former phrase in Decoud's mouth, while this one is presented as the narrator's own evaluation. It's a curious phrase to describe Decoud's skepticism, but it confirms that his skepticism is itself a form of imagination, i.e., a dream-ideal. Personally, I think "imaginative materialist" better describes Charles Gould himself.
