This phrase, which strikes us as valiantly prim, has deeper layers that are becoming
clear. The message of Nostromo, to which Charles Gould is awakening now,
is that "organized society" can only be constituted on the basis of
illusion and oppression. Gould was right in that enough wealth can establish those
decencies (as the Occidental Republic will demonstrate), but at the cost of a
new form of oppression and perhaps a new form of robbery.
