In this line I see another hint of Nostromo's turn to class-consciousness. Hernandez
represents social justice, but he remains offstage throughout almost the whole
novel, removing him allegorically to the level of a vague utopian dream. In a
sense the People (represented by Nostromo) are the only ones to truly see this
dream "eye to eye."
