Though we have seen Charles Gould on and off horseback, this is the only time
we see him dismount. It is, of course, a symbolic dismounting. Horses in Nostromo
represent conquest, and in this scene of his disillusionment he is giving
up the "conquest of peace"
on which he set out; he is admitting that a peaceful society is unattainable.
