The doctor's object, we learn later, is to preserve the safety of Mrs Gould, with
whom he has fallen in love. In this sense "object" has a double meaning,
for Mrs Gould has become his "object" of worship, his dream-ideal, in
the same way that the silver is Charles Gould's object of worship.
