Dr. Monygham is locked up in a "dark hole" of his own: not merely the
cell, but the sense of his disgrace and his resulting pessimism. At the moment
he is trying to be "of use" to Mrs Gould despite those qualities, and
so he must ignore the implication of Mitchell's statement.
