Mrs Gould is the focus of the light because she alone still carries (something
of) a pure humanitarian motive. The great benevolent dream-ideals of the other
characters -- Charles Gould, Don Jose Avellanos, Antonia, the chief engineer,
even the parliamentarians -- have all turned to embracing combat and destruction
in the name of saving mankind.
