Antonia's excitement is real on the allegorical level. Having seen the spiritual
death of the nation (Don Jose), and then heard Charles Gould withdraw the material
interests from the field of idealism (which made her throw off her veil), she
is now in a position to propose a new moral structure: that the material interests
supply the money for "any arrangement" (i.e., moral purpose) made between
Father Corbelan (religion) and Hernandez (socialism).
