Compare Nostromo experiencing "the end of things" ,
and also compare Decoud, for whom the darkness of the gulf was "the end of
all things."
In each case the character feels the world to be ending when his subjective world
encounters an obstacle. Note here the subjective language: it is the soldiers'
"ideas" vs. Captain Mitchell's "notion."
