There is a curious parallel here, perhaps unconscious on Conrad's part, in which
both characters in the extremity of confrontation appear to be duplicated, or
to have an external perspective on themselves. It seems to correspond with each
character's true nature emerging from the polished persona: Sotillo's avarice
turns to fear, while Mitchell's placid imperialism shows its fangs.
