This is one of the only places in the novel where the word "fact" refers
to an objective phenomenon (the wind) rather than to a subjective human influence.
But Mitchell's line highlights another meaning of "wind" here, that
of "knowledge," a thing that for all the characters has been at a minimum
in Conrad's evocation of this dark night of subjectivity.
