The chief engineer's "philosophical" argument is subjectivism ("each
man has his gifts"). It is therefore impossible to denote anyone a "fool,"
since that implies an objective standard of wisdom. The chief then goes on to
express his delight in Gamacho's "gift," his idiotic yet admirable brute
power.
