Dr Monygham's denunciation of the dream-ideal is based on the doctrine of futility,
backed by the ultimate argument of death. He has no dream-ideals ("spirtual
value"), he says, because he sees too clearly the inopposable reality of
doom; to consider himself capable of generating any improvement would be a form
of "self-flattery."
