The entire scenario is highly symbolic, perhaps the most artistically symbolic
episode of the novel. The lighter adrift on the Placid Gulf, freighted with dreams
desperation and fear, hearing but not seeing the vessel full of hostile but equally
lost soldiers, represents the essential human experience, a striving in the dark
towards illusory goals in a world of very real danger -- a "blind game with
death" indeed.
