Giorgio means that Teresa's treatment of Nostromo is a reaction to the death of
their son. Both Giorgio and Teresa would like Nostromo to live up to the impossible
standards of their dead son, who represents the failed dream of the People liberated.
The suggestion is that the two allegorical foster parents have different ways
of reacting to that failed ideal, i.e., the People's current condition.
