The second meaning of "it," the "treasure," is Nostromo's
integrity, his dream-ideal of trustworthiness and reputation. Note that his dream-ideal
too, like others in the novel, has finally reached the point where it would sacrifice
its purported object. The reputation that began as a means to a dynamic life and
a physical reward is now calling for Nostromo's death.
