Nostromo (the prototypical laborer) sets out on this adventure as the last entry
in what we might call his old career, where he gives labor to his rulers in the
expectation of reward. Whenever Nostromo refers to "this country," I
believe there is a wider reference to the People coming to America in hope of
bettering their social condition. His mumble indicates that there has been no
betterment so far.
