The silver of San Tomé, the primary symbol of the novel, again plays its
role as magnifier of every character's dream-ideal. To Nostromo, saving the silver
is the riskiest adventure of all, and the means to the greatest possible accomplishment
in terms of trustworthiness and reputation. A key word here is "resolved"
-- i.e., Nostromo has chosen the meaning of the adventure. Like Charles
Gould, he has willingly tied his identity to the fate of the silver.
