This cargador will finally die in Chapter 3-4, at a symbolic moment that equates
his death with the death of material progress as a moral force.
His widow will later be visited by Nostromo in Chapter 3-12, where the symbolism
of the "New Era" is repeated.
The cargador thus represents the allegiance of the workers to a moral vision of
material progress, an allegiance now in its last moments. He is an allegorical
echo of Nostromo, whom we have just seen "satiated" with the rewards
of fidelity, hinting at his coming revolt. Later Nostromo will make a deathbed
"confession" similar to the cargador's.
