Decoud, of course, will not live to see anyone again. But this goodbye is primarily
thematic, because with this paragraph begin the novel's ultimate moments of Separatism
-- meaning the fundamental isolation of subjective human natures. The birth of
the Occidental Republic (described in Part Three) will be another turn for Unionism,
or State-building, when indeed it will be appropriate for people to "clasp
hands."
