A deliberate political cast is given to Teresa's ambitions, showing that she, too, is after conquest of a kind.
Note that Teresa has no faith in the old, failed, distant Giorgio as a protector
of the children. Allegorically, this means that she has no faith in the protection
of a liberal government, and instead seeks protection from the level of the
People (Nostromo). In a sense she has been fighting to bring out the People's
maturity (socialism, or at least class-consciousness) all along.
