"Hijo del pais" does not quite translate to "son of the
country." For one thing, hijo is Spanish, while pais is French,
suggesting that Decoud is still balancing between Costaguanan passion and French
skepticism. But pais is a misspelling of pays (country); the former
means "feed," and eating in Nostromo is symbolic of violence,
suggesting that Decoud has accepted the necessity of violence in pursuit of his
ideal -- which makes him a true son of the country after all.
