The contrast here is deliberate. In a section of the novel devoted to separatism,
Charles Gould represents the unifying "State" of San Tomé, while
the chief engineer (as we will see) represents the Separatist impulse. Therefore,
the chief stands at the doorway, as if he has ushered everyone out, while Charles
Gould remains alone in the center of the room.
