The opening paragraph of Part Two serves to lay in plot points for the story to
come: the railway, the telegraph line, the mountain pass, and even the "ancient
Occidental State" in its natural seclusion. Even in this expository description,
however, one can see the themes of separateness and the frailty of communication.
