Mrs Gould's object, we shortly learn, has to do with Giorgio Viola's inn, an allegorical
request that I elaborate on below. The juxtaposition here, in which her object
seems to be the Costaguana flag, hints at the larger dimensions of her request
and her concern with "simple and picturesque" aspects of the country.
