An entertaining dance is going on this scene between Mrs Gould and Sir John, whose
respective ideals of altruism and empire are diametrically opposed. Mrs Gould
hushed Sir John's talk about dominating influence, and we then received the pathetic
representative of peace, her ideal. Now Sir John hushes Mrs Gould's talk about
picturesque simplicity, and we receive an equally pathetic representative of his
ideal, dominating influence.
