The returning phrase from the beginning of the novel is laced with irony now in
this discussion of labor troubles. Nostromo is "invaluable" to the rulers
because he is the point upon which the dream-ideal of progress converts smoothly
into coerced labor. In "a thousand" faceless, exploited and potentially
explosive workers, he is the one "fellow," i.e., ideological partner.
