The phrase echoes the chief engineer's prediction. But the repetition here, in the face of Viola who also doubles as Nostromo's "father," has an allegorical level. Who is the real "father" of the People -- Giorgio, who represents the failed dreams of their liberation, or Sir John, who represents the ever more successful material interests whom the People serve? As Nostromo's dialogue continues, we can sense his growing dissatisfaction with either father, his readiness to bid "Bon voyage" to more than just Sir John.
