These and other descriptions establish Dr. Monygham as a cynic: one who has scorn
for mankind and believes only in the lowest motives. Cynicism in Dr. Monygham
becomes a form of dream-ideal; we shall see that it is rooted in an idealized
conception of his own disgrace.
